ANAHEIM, Calif. - A newlywed killed by police after he stepped outside his home to confront suspected burglars was shot in a case of mistaken identity, police said.

Julian Alexander died after being shot twice in the chest by a police officer who was chasing four burglary suspects early Tuesday morning.

Police Chief John Welter said the officer ran into Alexander, mistook him for one of the four juvenile suspects and shot him.

"The last thing we ever want to do, No. 1, (is) take somebody's life," he said. "And we certainly don't want to take the life of someone who is mistakenly believed to be involved in some criminal activity."

"He was a good kid, trying to protect his house," said Alexander's mother-in-law Michelle Mooney. "And the police, instead of asking questions, they just shot first. Somebody has to be held responsible for this."

Welter would not release the officer's name, but said he was a 10-year veteran of the department. The officer was placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

"It's mistaken identity, but that doesn't bring my son back," said Alexander's father Jerry.

He said Alexander got married last weekend and his 19-year-old wife is expecting a baby in December.

Alexander's wife said she heard the gunshots and tried to go into the yard, but the officer told her to stay inside. From the window they saw Alexander handcuffed and bleeding in the front yard.

Paramedics treated him at the scene and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The four burglary suspects were detained and interviewed, but no arrests were made.

Welter said investigators would interview the officer to determine what commands he gave to Alexander before he fired. Investigations will be conducted by the FBI, the Orange County Office of Independent Review and the district attorney's office, Welter said.

hahaha ya gotta love the fact the 4 suspects were only questioned and then released. This is how the cops protect and serve.

I think the cops are too heavy handed and with power and instruments misuse them. Last night saw a cops on camera thing where a poor drunken woman was in a police cell. Slipped her cuffs because her hands were very small and asked for a cup of tea. She really was too drunk to want anything else or want to start trouble. The brave cops who out numbered her and were not being threatened "taizerd" her. She fell down and hit her head on the desk. they all jumped on her and wrestled her and got her arms behind her back again.

Terrible. just give her a cup of tea you bastards.

About 10 - 12 years ago (sometime in the last century!) a lady in Oklahoma City called 911 to send the people in the white coats out to get her grandfather who had - uh - his chain had jumped the sprocket.

There were no men in white coats - the OKCPD showed up - Grandpa came out into the yard naked, waving a Weedeater, and the police opened fire on him. I don't think that was what the Grand-daughter had in mind when she dialed 911 for Help.

I think the most important thing about stories like these is that, Thank God, they are very rare. I still like to believe that most Cops are The Good guys. MOST.

Have a case going on in Britain now. Mistaken shooting of an innocent person a few days after our terrorist attacks on tubes and buses killing 72 and injuring hundreds. There is a big stink because the man was shot without warning in forn of passengers who did not know what was going on and thought the police were terrorists too.

Understand the regretable over trigger nervosuenss after the bombing not knowing if the suspect may blow up and take everyone with him.

But shooting a guy on his doorstep. Don't you do "Halt!! Stop!! Hand In Air. Get on the ground."

Totally convinced many join police to have right to harass and shoot people and beat them up and think themselves John Wayne.

Must admit when it comes to Police camera action you do ahve the biggest nutters over there. Both public, criminal and police.
Ok we are coming a close second or maybe third. there's still the Japs.
